Father Boudon, an apostle of devotion to angels in the 17th century, describes the guardian angel's love for the soul he guards as equivalent to that of the most tender father, or that of the most devoted lawyer to his client, and even that of the bravest king who ever lived.
Thus, St. Bernard summarizes our duties toward our guardian angel in three essential points:
First, we must have respect for his presence. This means avoiding anything that might offend a pure and holy spirit, especially sin, constantly reminding ourselves that everything we do is seen by him and, therefore, must be done with order, respect, and dignity.
Second, we must have confidence in their protection. Since the angel is so powerful, continually before God and aware of our needs, it is essential to trust in their protection. The best way to demonstrate this trust is to turn to them through prayer in times of difficulty, especially during temptations. Although the angel knows our needs, God desires our request through prayer, as an act of humility and trust.
Finally, the third duty is love and recognition for his protection. We must be deeply grateful for the angel's invaluable protection, loving him not only as a benefactor, but as a true friend and brother.
