Maureen Digan 's life changed drastically at age 14 when she developed intense and painful swelling in one of her legs. After a medical evaluation, she was diagnosed with chronic progressive lymphedema associated with Milroy's disease —a rare condition in which the lymphatic system is unable to properly drain fluids, causing severe swelling, constant pain, and a high risk of infection.
At the time, there was no cure available . Treatments were limited to controlling symptoms, with rest, antibiotics, and palliative surgeries. The prognosis was grave, considered progressive and irreversible.
Over the next decade, her condition worsened dramatically. Maureen underwent dozens of surgeries - around 50 - in an attempt to contain the disease. Prolonged hospital stays became frequent, and her physical and emotional state deteriorated profoundly.
As the disease progressed, gangrene developed, leading to the amputation of her right leg. Subsequently, her other leg was also affected, eventually requiring amputation up to the hip. In addition, Maureen suffered from seizures, severe depression, and medication dependence, even wishing for death. During this period, she declared that she had completely lost her faith .
Her husband, Bob Digan, stood firmly by her side. A former soldier and devout Catholic, he never abandoned hope and his faith , even in the face of the irreversible situation. The couple also faced another difficulty: their son, Bobby, born in 1973, suffered from cerebral palsy and frequent epileptic seizures.
The change began when Bob watched a film about Divine Mercy and the life of Saint Faustina. Convinced that Maureen could receive a grace, he sought out Father Seraphim Michalenko and suggested a pilgrimage to the nun's tomb in Poland.
Despite the physical difficulties and the political context of the time, the family traveled to Krakow in March 1981. Initially skeptical, Maureen agreed to go at her husband's insistence. On March 28, she visited the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki. Before that, after years of estrangement, she made a confession, resuming her sacramental life.
That night, before Faustina's tomb, Maureen prayed directly and even defiantly to the saint. Internally, she reported receiving an answer: "If you ask for my help, I will give it to you."
Soon after, the pain disappeared. The swelling in her leg began to decrease rapidly. In less than a day, the limb regained its normal appearance. The change was so sudden that she even doubted her own experience at that moment.
Back in the United States, she was examined by independent doctors, who analyzed her complete medical history and concluded that there was no scientific explanation for her sudden and complete recovery.
