Giovanni Savino was a construction worker and devotee of Padre Pio. In February 1949, while helping with construction work at the convent where the saint lived, Giovanni received a strange warning: for four days in a row, Padre Pio hugged him and said only:
Padre Pio: “Take heart, I am praying that you will not die.”
On the 15th, during an explosion at the construction site, the dynamite failed. Giovanni approached to check and... the charge exploded right in his face. He was seriously injured, with his right eye completely destroyed.
At the hospital, doctors said he would never see again. Padre Pio then began to pray for him.
In the early hours of February 25, Giovanni woke up smelling a mysterious perfume and feeling the invisible presence of Padre Pio. He then asked him to intercede for the recovery of his sight. In the morning, he surprised the doctors: he could see perfectly with the eye that had been completely destroyed, while his left eye remained blind.
The miracle was so impressive that even an atheist doctor converted. Giovanni lived for more than 20 years seeing clearly with the eye that doctors said had been “gouged out.” And Padre Pio simply said, “If you only knew how much it cost me...”
